The South Dayton Knights Basketball Club
Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the program:
3rd,4th,5th,6th grade and 7th/8th grade
2009--2010
1. What league will the teams play in ?
Typically, all scheduling is done after CYO schedules are complete. Games usually begin the first week of December. Tournaments could be scheduled a few times during the season as well.
3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade will play in two different leagues. Division 1 in city of Dayton select league. Division 2 in Dayton Metro league. Our home games are played at Southdale Elementary, Kingdom or UD Recplex.
7/8th games are currently scheduled for 16-games, including some weekday games. Our home courts are UD recplex,Southdale and Alter H.S.
2. Will there be two teams ?
Yes, we'll have two teams in 4th,5th, and 6th grade, Div.1 and Div.2. The second teams would play in the Dayton Metro Division II , (25 game schedule)
7th and 8th grade will depend on turnout and available coaches.
3. When are the tryouts ?
We scheduled the tryouts for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade earlier than most of the other area select programs so that kids that are not selected by SDKBC will still have time to tryout for other teams.
7th/8th tryouts will be held in late-October, following football and soccer season and after most school team (CYO) tryouts are complete.
4. When/where will the team practice?
Practice times for the various 4th, 5th, and 6th teams vary but are held on Friday nights so they do not conflict with the CYO practice schedule. 3rd grade can practice any day of the week (usually Tu/Th)
7/8th practices will also be held Friday nights and some Sunday nights (after CYO games) so they will not conflict either.
Locations: Parkview Church of the Nazarene at 4701 Far Hills, next to David’s Cemetery; Christ United Methodist Church at 3440 Shroyer; and Ephipany Lutheran at 6430 Far Hills. Occasionally, we would also use Alter H.S. and the UD Recplex.
5. What is the cost to participate?
$250 per player for Div.I (includes admission pass) and $200 per player (also includes admission pass) for Div.II. The cost includes a player duffel bag and shooting/warm-up shirt. These fees also help to offset the abundance of charges including: new uniforms, gym rental/custodial charges for games, referee fees, insurance, court rental for games and practices, equipment, and Dayton Metro league fees and tournament entry fees. Please let us know following tryouts/selections if you need assistance.
6. Who are the coaches?
SDKBC takes great pride in our coaching staff--most coaches have extensive backgrounds playing basketball. . In addition, all coaches participate in a clinic prior to the season. SDKBC will also hold a player clinic, held in Nov. at UD, so players can learn from the various coaches.
The '09/'10 staff for SDKBC 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade teams will be determined following evaluations of the players in September.
7/8 grade coaches will also be announced following evaluations of the players in September.
7. What is the policy on playing time?
While practice is important to the development of young players, game experience is as well. It is our policy to ensure all of our players get a significant amount of playing time. We believe that the talent level of our teams will make that easy to manage. In fact, we believe our depth will be a competitive advantage we want to leverage.
7th /8th grade playing time determined by coach.
8. Is there any affiliation to Alter H.S.?
Not directly, but Alter Head coach Joe Petrocelli and his staff are updated on the policies/planning of the program and aid in obtaining gym time for practices and games. SDKBC may use an Alter facility on occasion and SDKBC will wear brown/gold. In addition, SDKBC coaches have an open invitation to engage any of the Alter coaching staff for information, questions, suggestions, etc. With those minor exceptions, the SDKBC is managed completely independent of Alter High School.
9. Is the SDKBC insured?
Yes. We also require each player’s family to carry their own medical insurance. SDK Coverage includes:
Medical payments for participants up to $25,000. This coverage pays for the medical and dental expenses incurred by a participant when an accidental injury occurs while participating in your covered sports activities. The coverage is provided on an excess basis, responding after all other medical coverage available to the participant has been exhausted. If no other medical coverage exists, the coverage becomes primary. A $100 deductible applies to each claim, and the benefit period is two years from the date of the accident. Also, general liability coverage for up to $3,000,000 - which protects your organization against liability claims for bodily injury and property damage arising out of premises, operations, products and completed operations.
10.Will teams change year to year ?
Absolutely. Please encourage your son to tryout for the team each year. Those boys who are selected to the teams have no advantage year after year. The Alter H.S. staff also encourages all boys to tryout for their H.S. teams, though boys who make the 8th grade SDKBC team do not have any selective advantage over other boys trying out for the freshmen team.
